Full Mouth Implants

Soho Smile

If you’ve lost all or most of your teeth, consider full mouth dental implants instead of dentures. Full dental implants are a permanent solution to replace your teeth. They’re anchored to your bone, so they’re meant to be worn all the time. You don’t have to take them out to clean them; just care for them by brushing and flossing. Full mouth implants have become the go-to solution for discerning New Yorkers.

Full Mouth Implants
When most or all of your teeth are missing or need to be replaced, you may think you need dentures. But consider full mouth dental implants instead. An alternative to dentures, dental implants attach to your jawbone and gums to become a base for dental crowns and bridges.

Designed to last, full dental implants look and function like natural teeth. They provide you the same ability to bite, chew and speak clearly. Unlike dentures, implants won’t wiggle or come loose while you’re eating or talking.

Benefits of Full Mouth Dental Implants
Full dental implants also help your bones remain intact and healthy. The implant posts stimulate your bone and gums that grow around them. This results in a natural look and feel that’s also more aesthetically pleasing than dentures.

There are several other advantages to choosing full mouth dental implants, such as:

Implants are permanently attached to your jawbone.
They don’t require daily removal or the use of adhesives.
Implants offer a comfortable fit and a natural bite.
They don’t require special care or repairs.
Implants replace some of your tooth roots, preserving your bone health.
They are the closest option to your natural teeth.
What to Expect During a Dental Implant Procedure
Before you can start this process, you may need one or more remaining teeth to be pulled. Full mouth dental implants replace a full arc of teeth —all of your upper or lower teeth. This is only an option if you’ve already lost all or most of your teeth.

The dental implant procedure has to be completed over the course of several months in multiple visits to your SoHo dentist like Dr. John Koutsoyiannis of Sohosmile, an expert in denture implants. After the first visit, you may be given temporary dentures.

John places several implants in your jaw — usually four to eight — slightly above the top of the bone. They’re covered with gum tissue, where they heal for three to eight months. During this period, the implants fuse with your bone.
Next, your SoHo dentist attaches abutments to the implants. These posts extend beyond your gum line and act as the links to the dental crowns or full bridge to come. Your gum tissue needs to heal around the posts for a couple weeks. In some cases, the implants come with the posts attached, eliminating the need for this step.
Finally, your dental crowns or full arc of teeth are inserted into position. These have been created to custom-fit your mouth. Before you leave with your new teeth, Dr. John ensures a proper bite.
Full Dental Implants: Painful or Risky?
You may experience some swelling and discomfort after each phase of surgery for full mouth dental implants. These side effects last for just a few days, and your dentist may prescribe pain medication to relieve your short-term discomfort. It’s a good idea to eat only soft foods — such as yogurt, applesauce or soup — as your gum tissue heals.

Most people don’t have problems after dental implant surgery, but there is a slight risk of complications. For example, after every surgery, no matter how minor, you run the risk of developing an infection. Let Dr. John know if you feel feverish, with chills or increased pain in your mouth and gums. In rare cases, serious complications can occur, such as nerve or sinus problems.

After Your Dental Implant Surgery
After your procedure, follow all Dr. John’s instructions. Avoid touching the area or chewing hard foods as long as your mouth and gums feel tender. Apply an ice pack to the area for 20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling.

Dr. John lets you know how soon you can resume regular activities. Keep in mind that smoking contributes to complications. While the procedure for getting implants takes months to complete, by the end, you have a full set of teeth again that permanently replace your natural teeth. You care for your crowns the same as normal teeth: by brushing and flossing.
